Mans best friend...i guess so

I’m going to go away from the norm and talk about a more serious topic. but don’t worry; it is still high grade nonsense. i know this story probably has been run into the ground, but bare with me. Today, Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte' Stallworth began serving a 30-day jail sentence for killing a pedestrian while driving drunk in Florida, a punishment made possible by his cooperation with investigators and the fervent wish by the victim's family to put the matter behind them. on May 20, 2009, Michael Vick was released from federal prison and is now on house arrest after funding and participating in a dog fighting ring. he was initially sentenced to 23 months for his crimes.

I have a slight beef with these cases. in one case; one man runs an illegal operation by fighting, profiting from and killing dogs. in the other case; the other man drives drunk through Miami and kills another human. one man gets EVERYTHING he has taken from him; millions of dollars in endorsements and contract money, his career, 23 months of his freedom, and also becomes vilified on every media outlet. the other man gets to cut a check to the family, 30 DAYS in jail, minimal media coverage, and (as of right now) a job to go back to. is this where we are as a society now…where a man’s life is not worth as much as some dogs? i know the cases are different. i know that Vick didn’t cooperate with the government like Stallworth did. but where is the hammer? where is the outrage that was there with Vick? is MADD protesting Stallworth like PETA was for Vick? is dog fighting so much worse than DUI manslaughter? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t endorse either crime, but i will kill my own dog before i let something happen to someone in YOUR family!

Maybe my priorities are wrong. maybe I’m the only one bothered by this. but it just doesn’t add up to me. you can’t have people think that drunk driving can be swept up under the rug. And I know it’s still early, but i hope Roger Goodell decides to come down hard on Stallworth and give him at least an 8 game suspension. i also hope that people begin to value human life as much as they do their dogs.

this is gb, and that’s the nonsense!

UPDATE: on June 18th, Cleveland Browns WR Donte' Stallworth was suspended indefinitely without pay by the NFL.
